YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has decided to postpone visits to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea due to the deadly earthquake hitting Yogyakarta and Central Java, a presidential spokesman said on Monday.
"The President wants to closely monitor rescue and
rehabilitation works in the earthquake-hit areas. The visits to DPRK, earlier
scheduled for June 5-7, and South Korea, set for June 7-9, will be rescheduled
later, but the dates have yet to be fixed," presidential spokesman, Dino Patti
Djalal said here.
"We have informed respective embassies of both
countries on this matter," Dino said.
He said that despite the postponement, Yudhoyono is
still committed to visiting the two countries.
Yudhoyono, who has been here since last Saturday
evening, is scheduled to visit earthquake victims living in emergency camps in
Yogyakarta and Central Java on Monday.
The earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale
jolted Yogyakarta and parts of Central Java and East Java provinces early
Saturday morning.
The quake's epicenter was located in the Indian
Ocean, about 37.6 kilometers southwest of Yogyakarta at a depth of 33 km. The
quake was felt at between 5th and 6th levels of Modified Marcelli Intensity
(MMI) in Yogyakarta, and at between 6th and 7th MMI in Klaten, Central Java.
