JAGDAQI, Heilongjiang Province, May 28 (Xinhua) -- A forest fire was still raging on Sunday in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province despite the best efforts of more than 10,000 police and firemen attempting to control the blaze, local forestry sources said.

Hampered by the high winds, thick bushes and hot, dry weather conditions, the firemen have so far failed to control the fire at the Kanduhe Forest Farm in the Greater Hinggan Mountains.

Running north to south through the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Heilongjiang Province, the Greater Hinggan Mountains area is the largest virgin forest-covered region in China.

Thousands fire fighters renewed efforts on Sunday night to put out the southeastern line of a separate forest fire raging in Aihui District of Heihe City in Heilongjiang.

The fire that broke out last Sunday at the Galashan Forest Farm in Nenjiang County of Heihe City has earlier spread to the city's Aihui District.

More than 3,000 firemen are still working to put out a spreading forest fire at Yakeshi City of the neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Enditem
