Special Report: Hamas-led cabinet takes office
KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Hamas-led Palestinian government is seeking support from the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to bring an end to a foreign-aid freeze on the country, a Palestinian official said Sunday.
The Palestinian government hopes to get both financial and political support from the NAM, said Palestinian National Authority Foreign Minister Mahmoud Al-Zahar upon arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Mahmoud arrived here to attend the NAM Coordinating Bureau (NAM-CoB) Ministerial Meeting at the Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC) to be opened Monday.
"This NAM meeting is our (Hamas) first major conference and we realize that Palestine is on the agenda. We will ask our colleagues to help the Palestinians as much as they can," Mahmoud told the Bernama news agency.
Mahmoud said his country has sent delegations to go to Indonesia and Brunei to get their backing and assistance, adding some other countries are also on the list.
Major donors, including the United States and the European Union, have cut off direct aid to the Palestinian government led by Hamas since the group formed a cabinet in late March.
Both the Hamas and the Fatah have sent delegates for the NAM-CoB Ministerial Meeting, which prepares for the 14th Conference of the Heads of States of the NAM to be held in Havana, Cuba this September.
Malaysia currently chairs the 114-member movement. Enditem |
