JERUSALEM, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Israeli air forces carried out raids on two Palestinian militant bases in Lebanon on Sunday in response to a Katyusha attack against an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base in northern Israel earlier in the day, an IDF spokesman confirmed to Xinhua.
The raids targeted two bases of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) - General Command, one of which was in Sultan Yaacub, less than 10 km from the border with Syria and another base in Naameh, about 10 km south of Beirut. The IDF spokesman claimed that the PFLP was responsible for Sunday's Katyusha attack.
At least five PFLP members were wounded in the airstrikes, Israel Radio reported.
Israeli Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that Israel could not ignore Katyusha attacks on its territory, the Ha'aretz daily said. Peretz was quoted as saying that he holds the Lebanese government responsible for attacks that originate from Lebanon's territory. He also called on the Lebanese government to deploy its army in the south of the country, an area under the control of Hezbollah.
A barrage of 122 mm Katyusha rockets fired from Lebanon landed in an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) base in the north early Sunday morning, wounding two soldiers and causing some damage. Enditem |
