Special Report: Earthquake in Indonesia

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Some 370 aftershocks have rattled Yogyakarta and Central Java towns as of Sunday, a day after a deadly earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked he area on Saturday morning.

Most of the aftershocks shook Yogyakarta with low magnitudes except for the ones which were recorded at about 4 on the Richter scale, Meteorological and Geophysics Agency's earthquake observation office head M Riyadi said here Sunday.

He denied rumors that tsunami would strike Yogyakarta, saying the killer waves usually occur 15 minutes to 30 minutes after an earthquake.

As of Sunday, the major earthquake killed more than 3,000 people in Yogyakarta and the surroundings -- 2,386 of them in Bantul district -- and 808 others in Klaten town, Antara news agency reported.

Many quake victims were believed to have been trapped under rubble in some areas in Yogyakarta on Sunday.

Australia, China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United States have sent humanitarian assistance for quake victims in Central Java.

The quake in Yogyakarta not only damaged people's houses but also a building at Adisucipto airport, a traditional king palace building, and a traditional Java kings cemetery.

An official of the East Kalimantan administration was reportedly killed when the airport building collapsed. Enditem
