Special Report: Earthquake in Indonesiaกกกก

YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Saturday's strong earthquake that struck Indonesia's Yogyakarta province has destroyed power transmission system and disturbed fuel distribution in Bantul regency, where over 2,200 people were killed in the disaster.

Most of fuel stations in Bantul were damaged by the 5.9-magnitude quake, causing more than a kilometer of vehicle line at several stations that remained to operate Sunday.

"I was allowed to fill only two liters of gasoline into my motorcycle," a man said while complaining that he has spent one hour at the fuel station.

Electricity was totally cut off in Bantul, but state-owned electricity company PLN vowed to gradually reactivate power system later in the day.

Data from the central disaster management in Bantul said the earthquake killed 2,236 people and flattened more than 7,000 houses.

The second largest death toll occurred in Klaten regency, just north of Yogyakarta, with 849 deaths. The Indonesia Red Cross estimated total death toll from the quake at 3,500. Enditem
