Special Report: Earthquake in Indonesia

HONG KONG, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive Donald Tsang on Sunday extended his deepest sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families of the earthquake in central Java, Indonesia.

In a telephone conversation with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono Sunday morning, Tsang said Hong Kong's aids agencies stood ready to help as the Director of Administration will coordinate the government's relief efforts in response to any request from Indonesia.

"On behalf of the Hong Kong community, I told the President that we are deeply grieved by the tragic loss and injuries of thousands of lives in Indonesia," Tsang said.

"We have over 100,000 Indonesians living in Hong Kong. They are part of our Hong Kong family. I wish them well and want them to know that we are behind them in such a trying time," he said.

A strong earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's ancient province of Yogyakarta and part of Central Java province Saturday morning, killing more than 3,000 people and injuring 10,000 more others.

Some 4,000 houses have been flattened and roads and bridges destroyed in the worst quake in the Southeast Asian country since Dec. 26, 2004, earthquake that triggered a tsunami, killing more than 230,000 people in countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. Enditem
