Special report: Earthquake in Indonesia
YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono started running his government works temporarily Sunday in the
Gedung Agung hall here, to coordinate with his ministers on the issue of
earthquake which rocked the region Saturday morning.
"The president is collecting reports from the ministers after holding a meeting
with them," according to presidential spokesman, Andi Malarrangeng.
Andi said earlier that the head of state had not decided whether or not the
disaster was categorized a national calamity.
Humanitarian assistance chiefly medicine and logistics for earthquake victims
and refugees continued to flow to Yogyakarta in the wake of the quake
which rattled Yogyakarta with a measure of 5.9 on the Richter scale, he said.
According to the spokesman, Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa had instructed
officers to continue repairing Adi Sutjipto Airport that was damaged
by the quake as well.
The transportation minister had targeted that the airport reparation would finish
on Monday and it would resume operation on that day too. The runway of the
airport was among the airport facilities that were damaged by the tremor.
Yudhoyono, who arrived here Saturday evening, had visited Solo, Klaten and
Bantul towns as well as Sardjito Hospital here to meet with quake victims.
Andi said, president Yudhoyono had received calls from world leaders,
including those from Singapore, China, Norway and the United States that pledged
medical assistance.
Meanwhile, National Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo said he could not
make an inventory of damaged school buildings.
"The government will make a list of teachers and students who were killed
by the quake," he said, adding that the government will allocate fund to repair
the damaged school buildings.
State electricity company PT PLN's transmission and distribution manager Herman Daniel also said, 49 out of 53 damaged electrical relay stations in Central Java had already been repaired. Enditem |
