On March
30-31, several earthquakes measuring 5-6 on the Richter scale
ravaged the western Iranian province of Lorestan, killing 66
and injuring almost 1,000.
2005:
On Feb.
22, a quake of 6.4 on the Richter scale hit the Zarand region
of the southeastern Iranian province of Kerman, which killed
over 600 and wounded nearly 1,000 others.
On March
28, an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale struck
about midnight off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island,
causing massive casualties and losses in property. Nias island
took the hardest hit, where 633 died, 50 missing and about
27,600 became homeless.
On Oct.
8, a 7.6-magnitude quake struck the Pakistani Kashmir, which
left 73,000 dead, almost 130,000 wounded and 2.8 million
homeless.
2004:
On Feb.
24, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake jolted Al Hoceima in the
northeast of Morocco, killing 628 and injuring 926.
On Dec.
26, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale
struck off Indonesia's Sumatra, triggering tsunami and leaving
over 230,000 dead or missing, among whom some 170,000 were
Indonesians.
