JAKARTA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) Commander Marshal Djoko Suyanto said repairs to Adi Sucipto airport's runaway damaged by an earthquake that struck Yogyakarta early Saturday morning were expected to be completed Saturday night, so airplanes bringing humanitarian aid could land on Sunday morning.

"We hope the work to repair cracks in the runway caused by the quake will be completed at Saturday night, so that airplanes can land again," Antara news agency quoted Djoko as saying.

He said the cracks in the airport's runaway were not so serious although a number of commercial flights had to be diverted to Ahmad Yani airport in Semarang or Adi Sumarno in Solo.

Adi Sucipto airport was also closed temporarily because some of its supporting aviation equipment were not functioning due to a disruption in electricity supply

The quake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas. Metro TV reported that up to know 2,986 people were killed by the earthquake. The Social Affairs Ministry put the figure to more than 3,000.

"The communication system, air navigation instruments and refueling facilities are also disturbed by the electricity supply cut," the commander said. Enditem
