JAKARTA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's National Atomic Energy Agency (BATAN) said Saturday the condition of its Kartini nuclear reactor in Yogyakarta has remained safe despite an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale that struck the province early Saturday morning.
"According on reports we have received, our reactor in Yogyakarta has remained safe," the Antara news agency quoted Arnold Y. Soetristanto, head of BATAN, as saying.
Meanwhile, Ferhat Azis, head of BATAN's public relations, confirmed some walls of the administrative building of the agency's Yogyakarta office were cracked.
"The reactor is used for research and has a capacity of 250 kilowatt," he added.
Apart from the facility in Yogyakarta, Indonesia also has a nuclear reactor in Serpong, Banten.
BATAN is developing nuclear technology for various sectors like energy, agriculture, husbandry, industry, health, hydrology and environment safety. Enditem |
