On March 28, an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale struck about midnight off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island, causing massive casualties and losses in property. Nias island took the hardest hit, where 633 died, 50 missing and about 27,600 became homeless.

On Oct. 8, a 7.6-magnitude quake struck the Pakistani Kashmir, which left 73,000 dead, almost 130,000 wounded and 2.8 million homeless.
