Handset shielding machines get side effects, but still used in exam

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhuanet) -- when a jounalist of Legal Daily stood before a handset shielding machine, which can shield mobile phone signals, just after 15 minutes, he could not endure it anymore. He felt dizzy and nausea, acoording to the report of Legal Daily on Wednesday.

Many provinces, such as Shandong, Heilongjiang and Liaoning, put handset shielding machines into use in both senior high school and college entrance exams in last year, and several others are planning to join the list this year.

The use of the handset shielding machines in exams has been a much disputed issue in the past year, as experts have expressed concern about their possible physical damage to people taking exams.

"Radiation generated by the shielding instruments may impair brain cells, crystalline lens and man's reproductive system," Tang Tai, who is the first inventor of handset shielding machine in China, an engineer with the Qinghua (Tsinghua) University said.

"It's irresponsible for educational departments to apply the technology in exams disregarding the side effects on those who are taking the exams," said Tang, who has repeatedly called for a ban on using shielding technology in this sense.

No machine will be used to shield mobile phone signals in both senior high school and college entrance exams in Beijing next month, according to the Beijing Education Examinations Authority.

Some provinces, however,  such as Shandong, Henan, will still put handset shielding machines into use in college entrance exams next month.

"We haven't found any case that the use of handset shielding machines in the exams has any physical impact upon student taking exams, so we will continue using the machine to shield mobile phone signals in college entrance exams," Zheng Guanzhou, a spokesman of  Henan Education Examinations Authority said Friday, according to Xinhua News Agency.  Enditem
