JAKARTA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The Dr. Sardjito Public Hospital in Indonesian province of Yogyakarta needs more doctors, medicine and tents for the victims of Saturday's earthquake that shook the city and other parts of Central Java, official news agency Antara reported.
Hospital spokesman Budi Mulyono said in Yogyakarta after the earthquake that at least 500 injured victims have been admitted to the hospital and more people continued to trickle in.
Budi said the medical supply at the hospital for the time being was sufficient but as the number of victims continued to rise, necessary anticipation should be made.
Makeshift tents are also needed because most of the victims at present are accommodated at the parking lots and the hospital yard due to limited rooms.
"For further anticipation we need more doctors, medical supply and makeshift tents for about 15,000 patients," Budi said, expressing hope that the crisis management center at the Health Ministry could meet the demand.
At least 51 people were killed and hundreds of others injured after an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the province and several parts of Central Java early on Saturday.
The earthquake left many houses and government office buildings into ruins in the city.
The Volcanological Research and Technological Development Agency (BPPTK) chief Purbo said the earthquake was triggered by the friction of earth layer and not by the coughing Merapi volcano.
However, the quake was feared to trigger more volcanic activities of Merapi because when the earthquake occurred, Merapi spewed massive clouds of hot gas into the air.
The earthquake destroyed a number of infrastructures including houses, office buildings, a sport stadium and even caused the Adi Sucipto airport in Yogyakarta to suspend a number of flights.
Telecommunication network and electricity supply in Yogyakarta were cut off due to the earthquake, which is recorded at the fifth level of Modified Marcelli Intensity (MMI). Enditem |
