BEIJING, May 24 -- Known as one of the top 80s-generation writers, Guo Jingming is a regular on the bestseller list. His second novel "Never Flowers in Never Dream," which depicts friendship and love in youth, especially broadened his popularity.

However, this popularity has taken a down turn as his second novel has been confirmed as a plagiarism of novelist Zhuang Yu's "In and Out of the Circle." Guo was ordered by the Beijing People's Supreme Court on Monday to pay compensation of 210 thousand yuan.
Guo Jingming and Chunfeng Publishing House of Literature & Art are also required to publish an apology in the China Youth Daily within a week, and cease sales of the book in Beijing's Xidan bookstore, which was one of the defendants in the case.
The case was initiated at the end of 2003 after Zhuang Yu received a reader's letter informing her of Guo's similar book.
Ironically, Zhuang's less popular book has seen boosted sales from the case.
