S.Korea hopes Kim Dae-jung's visit to DPRK brings new inter-Korean summit

SEOUL, May 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korean Prime Minister Han Myung-sook said Tuesday that she hopes former President Kim Dab-jung's upcoming visit to Pyongyang will help to bring a new round of inter-Korean summit.

"As prime minister, I hope the former president will make efforts to organize summit talks during his visit," Han told reporters.

"I think it would be fairly proper if a summit between President Roh Moo-hyun and North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is realized at this time," she added.

South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)agreed last week to arrange a visit by Kim Dae-jung to Pyongyang in late June. Kim Dae-jung is expected to meet with DPRK's top leader Kim Jong-il during his trip.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun had expressed his willing to meet with Kim Jong-il earlier.

Kim Dae-jung, who launched a historic visit to Pyongyang and held the first-ever inter-Korean summit with Kim Jong-il in June 2000, said on Tuesday at a conference that he hopes the June's visit to Pyongyang would help expand the inter-Korean exchanges, push forward the nuclear standoff and establish a peace-mechanism on the Korean Peninsula.
