JAKARTA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian Muslim cleric Abu Bakara Ba'asyir,
who is widely accused of leading regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah, is
expected to end his term in the Cipinang prison in Jakarta next month, a report
said Tuesday.
A lawyer representing Ba'asyir said the cleric would walk free from jail on
June 14 based on the official data from the prison, reported Detikcom news
website.
Ba'asyir, 65, will return to his hometown in Central Java wherehe runs a Muslim
boarding school, lawyer Achmad Michdan was quoted as saying.
The elderly cleric is convicted of a "sinister conspiracy" thatled to the
bombings on Bali island in October 2002, in which 202 people were killed.
He has been serving his two-and-a-half-year prison term during which he
enjoyed remissions totaling four months and 15 days.
The granted remission has angered Australia, whose 89 citizens were killed
in the bombings.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has met with his Indonesian counterpart Hassan Wirajuda asking no more reduction of Ba'asyir's term. Enditem |
