WASHINGTON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said Monday that Iraq's new government "opens a new chapter" for Iraq," and represents a major victory for democracy.
"The new Iraqi government does not change our objectives or our commitment. But it will change how we achieve those objectives and how we honor our commitment," Bush said in a speech in Chicago.
As the new Iraqi government led by Prime Minister Nur al-Maliki grows in confidence and capability, "America will play an increasingly supporting role," Bush said.
Maliki announced on Saturday the formation of Iraq's first permanent government since the 2003 US-led invasion of the country.
Following the formation of the permanent government, the Bush administration is facing growing calls for a withdrawal of the estimated 130,000 US troops in Iraq.
However, the White House remains on its stand that any American withdrawal would be "conditions-based".
"The conditions on the ground still determine how long troops stay there," White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters. Enditem |
