SEOUL, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Park Geun-hye, chairman of South Korea's opposition Grand National Party (GNP), was attacked by an unidentified man and was taken to hospital, the Yonhap news reported on Saturday afternoon.

    Park was attacked in the face by an unidentified man with an unknown weapon when she was canvassing for Oh Se-hoon, GNP candidate for Seoul mayor, in Sinchon in Seoul. She was taken to a hospital nearby after the attack.

    "She has an approximately 10-centimeter cut to her face which is seven centimeters deep. It will require stitches," a GNP official said.

    The suspect was caught at the scene and taken to police station,Yonhap said.

    There is still no government comment on the incident.

    Park, oldest daughter of former President Park Chung-hee, is regarded as one of the most hopeful candidates for the next presidential election. Enditem
