DHAKA, May 19 (Xinhua) -- One worker was killed and 22 others were wounded in machine explosion at a textile mill in northern Gazipur district on Thursday night, private television channel (I) reported on Friday.

After the explosion of the machine, scared night shift workers raced to come out of the textile mill located at Kaliakoir, about 45 km north of Dhaka, resulting in injuring 22 of them.

The television did not mention the cause of explosion. It said the injured workers were admitted to local hospital.

Fire and explosion of boiler machine in textile mills in Bangladesh are very frequent, killing scores of workers of the industry, which employ around 2 million workers, 90 percent of whom are women.

Garment export is the number one foreign exchange earner of the country, which fetches around 4 billion U.S. dollars annually and the amount is about 70 percent of the export earnings of this South Asian nation with a population of 140 million. Enditem
