Little water pollution seen in Yangtze's upper reaches: Dam builder

    YICHANG, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Water quality at the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway, has remained unchanged after the Three Gorges Dam began storing water in 2003, says a chief builder of the project.

    "The dam area has maintained a sound ecological environment and water in the Yangtze's upper reaches is still up to drinking standards," said Xie Xiufa, a water conservancy specialist and senior engineer with the Yangtze River Water Resources Committee, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on Sunday. Full story >>

Expert: Three Gorges project expected to save 50 mln tons of coal annually

    WUHAN, May 14 (Xinhua) -- As a clean energy project, operation of the Three Gorges Project, the world's largest hydropower project, will help China reduce consumption of 50 million tons of coal per year, thus benefiting the environment in China and its neighboring countries.

    Xie Xiufa, a senior engineer with the Three Gorges Bureau under the Yangtze River Water Resources Committee, said in an interview with Xinhua the generating capacity of the Three Gorges power plant is equivalent to seven thermal power plants with each having an installed capacity of 2.6 million kilowatts. Full story >>
