U.S. urges Syria to comply with UN resolutions

WASHINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The United States said on Wednesday that Syria should comply with the United Nations Security Council resolution adopted earlier Wednesday as well as other resolutions with respect to Lebanon.

"We would expect that they (Syria) would comply with this as well as other and previous Security Council resolutions with respect to Lebanon," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said at a briefing.

McCormack said that the United States has hoped that the resolution would have been adopted unanimously, but it failed. "But 13 votes for is still pretty good and sends a strong message to the Syrian government," he said.

Earlier Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council passed aresolution to press Syria to respond positively to Lebanon's request to establish diplomatic relations and mark their border. However, Syria has rejected the measure.

The resolution was passed with 13 votes for and Russia and China abstained. Enditem
