Fiji electoral commission orders recount of votes
www.chinaview.cn 2006-05-17 13:54:05

WELLINGTON, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's electoral commission has ordered Wednesday a recount of votes for an open seat.

The winning margin was less than 0.5 percent of the vote cast, which makes a recount mandatory.

The seat had been secured by the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua Party (SDL).

With results declared for 30 seats in the 71-member parliament, SDL party had 14 seats and the main opposition Labour Party 13 seats.

SDL leader and Caretaker Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase said his party "will have a working majority and will form the next government", said local news service The Fijilive.

But Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said SDL has not won the 2006 general election.

The recount might delay the declaration of all final results until Thursday. Enditem
