MADRID, May 14 (Xinhua) -- World champion Fernando Alonso beat Michael Schumacher to win the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Renault driver finished 18.5 seconds ahead of his German opponent, becoming the first Spaniard to win his home Grand Prix.

Alonso led virtually from start to finish to take his third win of the season and 11th of his career.

He also extended his lead in the drivers' world championship to 15 points over Ferrari driver Schumacher, the seven-times world champion.

Alonso's Italian teammate Giancarlo Fisichella completed a solid afternoon for Renault by finishing third, holding off Brazilian Felipe Massa in a Ferrari.

McLaren driver Kimi Raikkonen leapt from ninth to fifth at the start and held the position through to the end, beating Briton Jenson Button and Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, both in Hondas. Enditem
