BRUSSELS, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Dutch coach Marco van Basten has opted for
youth and drive when announcing his 23-man squad for next month's World Cup
finals in Germany on Sunday.
Such veterans
as Edgar Davids and Clarence Seedorf failed to make it into the final squad for
the tournament, due from June 9 to July 9.
The squad contains only two players, midfielder Philip Cocu andgoalkeeper
Edwin van der Sar, with World Cup experience.
Van Basten also places his trust on home-based players despite the exodus
of top Dutch stars to the top European leagues.
As many as 14 Dutch-based players were selected with Ajax and Alkmaar
supplying five each, three coming from champions PSV Eindhoven and one from
Feyenoord.
The Dutch squad will gather on May 21 for a training week in Switzerland
and host Cameroon on May 27 in a friendly in Rotterdam.
They will also play World Cup contenders Mexico and Australia in the final
two friendlies on June 1 and 4.
The Netherlands are grouped with Cote D'Ivoire, Serbia & Montenegro and
Argentina for the tournament. Enditem
