Cholera death toll hits 1,200 in Angola

    LUANDA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization said here on Friday, a cholera outbreak in Angola that broke out mid-February has claimed 1,200 lives from out more than 32,000 cumulative cases.

    In its latest update on the epidemic that has infected 32,634 people in 11 of Angola's 18 provinces, the WHO said that 591 new cases of the disease and seven deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. The case fatality rate is 4 percent.

    The province of Luanda, where cholera erupted in slum districts of the capital 12 weeks ago, continues to bear the brunt of the epidemic and 232 fatalities have occurred from over 16,558 cases. Enditem
