JERUSALEM, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Four Palestinian militants
were indicted for the murder of former Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam
Zeevi in 2001 as they stood trial at the Jerusalem District Court on
Friday, local Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said.
The men, all members of the People's Front for the
Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), are charged with murder and attempting to carry
out terror attacks in Israel. They will remain in custody until June 8 when
another hearing on the case is scheduled to take place.
The four suspects were arrested and taken to Israel
along with their leader Ahmed Saadat and former financial adviser in the
Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Poaz Shubaki during a high-profile Israeli
raid on a Palestinian prison in the West Bank city of Jericho on March 14.
Shubaki and Saadat were only charged with security
offenses after prosecutors failed to establish grounds for their indictment in
the murder case.
Israeli Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and State
Prosecutor Eran Shendar decided to bring the four men to trial again, despite
the fact that they have already been tried in a Palestinian court and were
serving their sentence when nabbed by Israeli army.
Mazuz and Shendar emphasized that it is of a symbolic
importance to hold the trial in Israel because the murder took place in
Jerusalem. Enditem |
