Indonesia hopes to play important role in global human rights issues

    Bali, Indonesia, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian President SusiloBambang Yudhoyuno said on Friday that he expected his country to play an important role in the issues of human rights at global level.

    He made the remarks after meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on the sideline of the D-8 Summit.

    "Indonesia was very happy to be elected into the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations, which could promote the country to play a big role in the human rights issues of the world," he said.

    He expressed thanks to the supporters of Indonesia's election and hoped that it could bring rule of law, better democracy, more respect for human rights to the archipelago.

    However, the President did not mention what he had talked with Badawi.

    Susilo is also scheduled to meet with Nigerian President Olesegun Obansanjo and Pakistani Prime Minister Syaukat Aziz laterFriday.

    The D-8 leaders from Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Pakistan will discuss strategic ways of enhancing trade and economic cooperation. Enditem
