KATHMANDU, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The treatment of the Gastroschisis, a disease
that intestines of a newborn infant come out of the abdomen, has now been
possible in Nepal, a medical doctor said here Friday.
"A successful operation of gastroschisis was conducted in a private Ishan
children's Nursing and Maternity Hospital at Dhumbarahi area of downtown
Kathmandu city," R.P. Chaudhari, a senior pediatrician who was involved in the
treatment, told reporters at a press conference.
The treatment of such patients was possible in foreign countriesonly,
Chaudhari noted, adding, "in Nepal, such patients used to bedeclared dead
without initiating any treatment process before."
Chaudhari said the operation on the infant went for 12 hours and succeeded.
Artificial oxygen was given to the infant for two days after the operation
and the milk was given after eight days. "Now the condition of the infant is
reported to be normal," Chaudhari said.
Such infants in foreign countries have been cured before birth (in mother's womb), whereas, it was impossible in Nepal despite 4-5 such cases had been found every year at Kanti Children's Hospital, the only one government run children hospital of the country, Chaudhari added. Enditem
