SHANGHAI, May 11 -- Organizing one of China's top jewelry fairs involves plenty of cops, cameras and police dogs to protect glittering pieces worth millions of yuan.
Jewelry Shanghai 2006, a four-day show that will wrap up on Saturday, is the biggest jewelry fair in Shanghai in terms of both floor space and security.
The organizers of the fair, held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in Pudong, have spent about 1 million yuan (US$120,000) to hire 100 police officers, some equipped with guns and some working undercover, to keep their eyes on the precious metals and stones. They also installed almost 400 surveillance cameras and have four police dogs on duty.
"The equipment, the dogs and the policemen are not the only protection," said Wei Guangming, a fair organizer. "Enhancing exhibitors awareness against theft is a key point."
