PARIS, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Italy striker Christian Vieri is likely to miss next month's World Cup due to his knee injury.

His club Monaco said on Tuesday Vieri will undergo surgery in the next few days "because of the way his injury has worsened".

Vieri picked up the injury in a match against Paris Saint-Germain on March 28.

The club didnot say how long he will be out of action, but the injury was a major blow for the 32-year-old Vieri who had moved from AC Milan to Monaco in January to have more playing time and bigger chances of making Italy's World Cup squad.

He made seven appearances for Monaco with three league goals scored.

The World Cup will take place from June 9 to July 9. Enditem
