Russia says Mid-East mediation to revive dialogue on road map

Special report: Crisis between Israel and Palestine

MOSCOW, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The task of international mediators on a Mid-East settlement is to revive the prospect for the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue based on "the road map," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Sunday before the coming meeting of Russia, the United States, the UN and the EU in New York.

"Under the present circumstances," Mikhail Kamynin was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying, "the task of the Quartet is to help the sides to revitalized the prospect for talks, based on 'the road map', which will help to create an independent Palestinian state which will live in peace and security with Israel."

According to Kamynin, the meeting of the Quartet on Tuesday calls increased attention in the world -- "the acute nature of the time is determined by the fact that a very difficult situation has developed in Palestinian-Israeli relations, the peaceful process has stopped and tension is building up".

"It is necessary that the Quartet should bring a signal to the attention of the two sides on the need for abiding by the principles of repudiation of violence and implementation of earlier agreements," Kamynin underlined.

Kamynin said that the humanitarian, social and economic crisis in the Palestinian territories would be one of central topics at the New York meeting. It is important "to reach such decisions which would stop degradation of the humanitarian situation in the region and would help to preserve Palestinian institutes of power, created during the peaceful process".

Russia sent an emergency aid of 10 million U.S. dollars to the office of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday. Abbas immediately distributed the money to humanitarian programs agreed upon with Russia.

"The money was transferred to a special account of the office of the head of the Palestinian Authority and will be used to meet humanitarian needs of Palestinians," Kamynin said. The aid to Palestinians should continue, he added. Enditem
