"It is often unexpected to break records. It does not take place as you would like," Liu told reporters after winning the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 13. 22 seconds at the Osaka Grand Prix on Saturday.

    Liu clocked a time of 12.91 seconds at the 2004 Athens Olympics, leveling the world mark held by Briton Colin Jackson.

    "I've never thought of beating the world mark, let alone making a specific plan on when to break it.

    "What I do now is to adjust my form, making progress on a step-by-step basis," said Liu.

    Liu sprained his ankle in February before the start of the domestic indoor season and the Osaka meeting was his first race since November's East Asian Games.

    "Coming off the injury I didn't expect such a good time today. But I always believe in my ability and today's result is proof of that," he said. Enditem
