SHANGHAI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- More and more people in Shanghai, China's major
economic powerhouse, are complaining about the increasing noise of motor
vehicles, and local environmental officials and police say they now focus on
dealing with drivers who blow the horn against set rules.
However, it is difficult to catch the driver who horns in where horning is
not allowed, according to the officials.
An average of 2,198 automobiles are running on the major streets of the
city per hour at daytime and 1,094 at night, according to the city's 2005
environmental report.
The average level of traffic noise reaches 72 decibels during the day and
65.8 decibels at night, a level indicating serious sound pollution, says the
report.
Environmental officials say the key to reducing sound pollutionin the city
with more than 1 million automobiles is to raise the public awareness of
environmental protection, especially that of drivers. Enditem
