PARIS, May 4 (Xinhua) -- French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said Thursday that Paris would remain highly attentive to the case of Zacarias Moussaoui, a French citizen sentenced to life in prison in the United States on charges related to the 9/11 attacks.

    "I have asked my services and our embassy in Washington ... to remain highly attentive to Zacarias Moussaoui's situation, in coordination with the justice ministry," the French minister said in a statement.

    He said he was not in a position to comment on the U.S. verdict,saying that France had "several times stressed its constant opposition to the death penalty."

    The 37-year-old French citizen was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for his role in the 9/11 attacks conspiracy, after a jury rejected a death penalty.

    French Justice Minister Pascal Clement has said in London that "if Moussaoui made a request for transfer to France, his demand will be examined".

    The French Foreign Ministry also said such a request could be examined under existing judicial agreements between France and the United States. Enditem
