www.chinaview.cn 2006-05-04 09:21:55

VIENNA, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Wednesday offered its condolences to Armenia and Russia following the miserable airplane crash in the Black Sea.

The EU "extends its sincere condolences to the governments and people of Armenia and the Russian Federation following the tragic crash on May 3 of the Armavia Airlines flight en route from Yerevan to Sochi," said Austria, which currently holds the rotating EU presidency, in a statement.

"On behalf of the European Union, the presidency expresses its grief at the loss of life and offers its deepest sympathy to the families and friends of all those who died in the crash," the statement said.

An Airbus A-320 of the Armenian airline belonging to the air company Armavia crashed into the Black Sea near the southern Russian resort town of Sochi at around 2:15 a.m. local time (2215 GMT Tuesday), killing all 113 people on board, including six children and eight crew.

Bad weather conditions were blamed for the crash, the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said.

Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday sent a message to his Armenian counterpart Robert Kocharyan, expressing his sincere condolences to the families of the victims. Enditem
