Massive fire in N.Y.still burning
www.chinaview.cn 2006-05-04 08:07:21

NEW YORK, May 3 (Xinhua) -- After more than 24 hours, firefighters are still battling to put out a massive blaze in a New York warehouse Wednesday, a group of arson and explosion experts was called in to help with the investigation.

Demolition crews are pulling down the last remaining walls of the old Greenpoint Terminal Market as firefighters pour water on the last stubborn flames. Officials say it could take days before they are able to do serious work and figure out exactly what caused the blaze.

"The fire marshalls' work will begin after we're able to move some of the debris out," said fire department assistant chief Edward Killduff, noting some serious investigation may start Wednesday afternoon or Thursday.

He said his department was concerned that much of the area that needs to be analyzed had either collapsed or needs to be demolished.

Eight firefighters of the more than 400 who responded Tuesday were injured in the 10-alarm fire, which fueled ominous streams ofsmoke across the sky in the city's largest fire in a decade, excluding the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

The destruction of the historic Greenpoint Terminal Market, which consisted of seven abandoned buildings, began about 5:30 a.m.under "suspicious" circumstances.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says arson is possible.

Before the fire destroyed the seven-building complex, the site's owner Joshua Guttman had proposed transforming the site into a residential, retail, and park development. His lawyer told severalnewspapers that his client has no idea how the fire started.

The city's Department of Environmental Protection has been on the scene and told residents the smoke is not unusually hazardous.

Fire officials say the buildings were officially unoccupied, but it is not clear if any squatters lived there.

It is also unclear what was inside the warehouses, but Scoppetta says bales of cloth burned in one of the buildings. Enditem
