BERLIN, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The German government denied on Wednesday the reports that up to 40,000 women would be forced into prostitution during the World Cup soccer games in June and July.

There was "no evidence whatsoever" for the tally, Gregor Rosenthal, German government's top official for the security of the games, said in an interview with the German news agency DPA.

German police had no "concrete" figures on such trafficking of prostitutes, the official said.

On Monday, US Representative Christopher Smith said that the German government would be blamed for a significant influx of trafficked women who will be exploited. Reports said that up to 40,000 women from Eastern Europe and former Soviet countries could be smuggled into Germany to work as prostitutes during the World Cup finals, which are due to be held in 12 German cities in June and July.
