Indonesia beat Japan in Thomas Cup badminton

    TOKYO, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Powerful Indonesia beat hosts Japan 3-1 to reach the semifinals of the Thomas Cup badminton tournament here on Wednesday.

    Japan got off to a good start as Shoji Sato beat reigning Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat 20-22, 21-16, 24-22 in the first singles match. But Japan's hope of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in 27 years also ended there.

    Indonesia drew even after Luluk Hadiyanto and Yulianto Alven beat Keita Masuda and Tadashi Otsuka 21-13, 21-16 and they went ahead 2-1 with Soni Dwi Kuncoro's 22-20, 21-7 win over Sho Sasaki.

    Markis Kidho and Hendra Setiawan then wrapped up the victory for the Indonesians by beating Shintaro Ikeda and Shuichi Sakamoto 21-15, 21-18. Enditem
