MADRID, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Spain's Foreign Minister Minguel Angel Moratinos Tuesday summoned Bolivian Trade Attache Alvaro del Pozo to express Spain's "deepest concerns" over the Bolivian gas nationalization move, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
ĦĦĦĦThe statement said it was worried about the methods to be used to nationalize the country's crude oil and natural gas reserves asannounced by Bolivian President Evo Morales on Monday, and also about "the potential consequences on bilateral relations".
The ministry also reminded Bolivia that it had promised to inform the Spanish government of the decision, and renewed Spain's hope for "a solution that both sides would find satisfactory".
Meanwhile, Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandezde la Vega said on Tuesday that the government would discuss with the representatives of Spanish enterprises that operate in Bolivia.
Also on Tuesday, Spanish-Argentine company Repsol-YPF, which accounted for 25.7 percent of Bolivian gas production, said it waswilling to renegotiate its contracts with Bolivia.
In a decree issued on Monday, which marked the International Labor Day and his 100th day as Bolivia's president, Morales gave foreign energy companies 180 days to sign new contracts with the state.
Under the new contracts, foreign companies will remain as operators, but no longer in charge of productions, while the Bolivian state-owned firms become the majority shareholder.
A typical contract would give 82 percent of the profits to Bolivia's state oil company YPFB, in which 50 percent would be royalties, 32 percent to pay the YPFB, and the remaining 18 percent to its foreign partners. Enditem |
