WASHINGTON, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Barry Bonds hit his 712th career home run on Tuesday to move within two of the great Babe Ruth who is currently second on the all-time Major League Baseball list, reports said from San Francisco.

Bonds, who is being investigated over whether he lied about using steroids to the BALCO laboratory federal grand jury, hit an eighth inning solo home run to center field against the San Diego Padres.

The 41-year-old left fielder's latest home run came on the last game of a home series where he has been warmly embraced by the fans.

The Giants play the Milwaukee Brewers for two games starting on Wednesday, then three games in Philadelphia before returning home next Monday. Enditem
