China retains Swaythling Cup at table tennis worlds

    BREMEN, May 1 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese men paddlers whitewashed South Korea 3-0 to retain the Sway thling Cup at the 48th World Team Table Tennis Championships in Bremen, Germany on Monday.

    Ma Lin's 3-0 victory over Lee Jung Woo put China on the top of the awarding platform in front of the full-capacity stadium.

    "I was a bit nervous at the start because I lost yesterday, but adjusted myself later as my coaches had confidence-boosting talks with me last night," Ma said.

    "I felt quite easy and fluent later," he said.

    Wang Hao won an easy opener over Oh Sang Eun 3-0 (11-6, 11-8 and 11-4) in the opening rubber before top-ranked Wang Liqin scored a hard 3-2 victory over Olympic champion Ryu Seung Min.

    Wang Hao blanked Oh 11-6 despite a tight race at the initial stage, and took the second set 11-8.

    The Chinese paddler, who looked in very good form, unleashed powerful attacks against the South Korean top player to win the third 11-4 and to seal the match in just 15 minutes.

    South Korea called time-out when the scores were 4-0 with Wang Hao in the lead, yet Oh could not find a way out.

    Wang told reporters that what made him to even in face of difficulties was "a stable mood".

    "Whatever happened, I will use the strategies prepared before-hand."

    In the second rubber, Wang Liqin beat Ryu 11-8 at their first encounter, but lost the second and third 9-11 and 8-11.

    The two famous player drew roars of cheers from the fully-packed audience as they displayed excellent skills.

    In the second set, Wang Linqin was 1-5 behind, but he gradually narrowed the distance 2-5, 3-5, 3-6,4-6, 5-6, 6-7.

    When Wang boost a score to 8-9, a dramatic show appeared: they could not find the ball for a while. When the play resumed, Wang lost the hard set at 9-11.

    Wang led the third before Ryu reversed the situation and won at 8-11.

    After 1-2 behind, Wang went into the fourth race 1-3 behind, but he dashed bravely to the fore at 5-4 and then made it at 11-9.

    In the fifth crucial set, Wang led all the way to 11-7 and won the game at 3-2, leaving China 2-0 over South Korea.

    In the third rubber, Chinese Ma Lin lagged behind over Lee. He made it 4-all and kept in the fore 7-5 to win the first set 11-9.

    Ma, who lost his semi-final match against Germany's Timo Boll on Sunday, led by four points before lost five points in a row. However, Ma overtook Lee 7-6 quickly and surged to 11-7 in the second set for a 2-0 commanding lead.

    In the third set, when Ma led 3-0, the Korean team called time-out.

    Ma lost three points to settle for the 4-all tie. From 5-5, Ma made the most of his spins to control the match before sealing it at 11-7.

    The 3-0 victory made China retain the Swaythling Cup achieved two years ago in Doha, Qatar.

    South Korea lifted its position from third to second, while Germany and Chinese Hong Kong placed joint third. Enditem
