JAKARTA, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian police said on Friday the county would be declared on full alert during the commemoration of the international workers' day on May 1 to anticipate violent rallies across the country.

National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam told reporters here the police anticipated huge crowds of protesters during the day and would deploy two-thirds of its strength to ensure security.

Anton called on labor unions to refrain from mobilizing workers into the capital city, which saw labor rally went rampage earlier this month.

Jakarta Police Chief Insp. Gen. Firman Gani said 10,000 personnel would be deployed in Jakarta alone to safeguard strategic places like the Presidential Palace, vice president's office and parliament building.

"We will try to calm the rally with persuasive method and avoid the use of sticks, guns or tear gas," he said.

The government has proposed amendment of the existing labor law to reduce company's costs when firing workers in an effort to lure investment.

The plan has triggered protests from thousands of workers who flooded Jakarta on April 5.

Meanwhile, Vice President Jusuf Kalla urged workers to voice their demand in peaceful ways.

"Indonesia is perhaps the only country where the Labor Day is celebrated with rallies," Kalla said.

The government has listened to workers' aspiration concerning the law amendment and would review the plan, he said. Enditem
