WASHINGTON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Minnesota Timber
wolves forward Kevin Garnett was named the winner of the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy
Citizenship Award on Thursday, an honor given to a player or coach for
outstanding community service.
"I am happy that I can help make a difference in the
communities, and blessed to be in the position where I am able to lend support.
Hopefully, this will encourage others to do the same," the nine-time All-Star
said in a prepared statement released by the NBA form New York.
As part of his Hurricane Katrina relief efforts,
Garnett donated 1.2 million dollars to television personality Oprah Winfrey's
Angel Network to build 24 homes - one house per month for the next two years.
He also participated in an NBA Players Hurricane
Relief Game in Houston, in which each player donated a minimum of 10,000 dollars
in cash and supplies.
Garnett has also developed an ongoing partnership
with the Minneapolis Urban League to assist hurricane survivors in Minnesota and
has hosted affected families in his suite at the Target Center arena. Enditem
