Special report: Snap general election in Thailand
BANGKOK, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Thai Democrat Party and other former
Opposition parties jointly urged Thursday the Administrative Court to nullify
the April 2 general election.
The move came one day ahead of a meeting of the country's top judges to
seek common ground on achieving a solution to end the ongoing political crisis,
the Thai News Agency reported.
The chief judges of the Supreme Court, as well as the Administrative and
Constitutional courts, are scheduled to meet Friday. They will discuss all legal
aspects to solve the politicalstalemate in response to advice by the King
Bhumibol Adulyadej.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej urged the top courts to solve the political crisis
after a second round of voting failed to produce the necessary full complement
of 500 MPs to convene the first meeting of parliament, which is charged with the
task of naming a new prime minister.
Deputy Democrat Party secretary general Thaworn Senniam lodged the petition in the name of the former Opposition bloc to the Administrative Court to declare the general election null and voidbecause, he alleged, "the race for parliament was rigged with small, little-known parties having been hired to contest only as token rivals" and that the electoral rules were thereby violated.
