European Commission to provide 117.5m euros for Nias, Aceh

    JAKARTA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The European Commission has signed the second commitment agreement to provide Multi Donor Fund with 117.5 million euros to finance post-earthquake and tsunami reconstruction efforts in Nias and Aceh, Indonesia.

    The move indicated full commitment of the European Commission to provide 202.5 million euros to Multi Donor Fund, Antara news agency quoted a press release issued the institute on Wednesday assaying

    Since it was set up in May 2005, Multi Donor Fund has taken active part in 12 reconstruction projects worth 288 million US dollars in Nias and Aceh. Work on four reconstruction projects worthing 102 million US dollars is underway.

    The projects include reconstruction and renovation of 13,000 houses, development of infrastructure facilities in rural areas, improvement of transportation facilities, and promotion of regional administration officers' skill.

    Multi Donor Fund was established at the initiative of the Indonesian government to coordinate funds given in the wake of a 8.9 on the Richter scale earthquake and subsequent tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people and rendered hundreds of thousands of others homeless.

    The institute has so far raised more than 530 million US dollars from the European Commission, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Canada, Sweden, Germany, the United States, Belgium, New Zealand and Ireland. Enditem
