HANOI, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Six members of the Political Bureau under the outgoing Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC), including incumbent general secretary of the committee Nong Duc Manh, have been nominated for the membership of the ingoing CPVCC, local media reported Monday.

    The six people include Manh, secretary of the Party Committee of Ho Chi Minh City Nguyen Minh Triet, deputy prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung, secretary of the Party Committee of Hanoi capital Nguyen Phu Trong, director of the CPVCC's Commission on Economy Truong Tan Sang, and minister of public security Le Hong Anh, Young People newspaper quoted Dao Duy Quat, vice director of the Commission on Ideological and Cultural Affairs, as saying.

    The ingoing CPVCC will hold its first meeting on Monday afternoon, during which it will elect the Political Bureau with expected 15-17 members. Right after the Political Bureau is elected, the committee will elect the CPVCC's general secretary who is the bureau's member.

    On Sunday afternoon, 1,176 delegates to the 10th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, on behalf of 3.1 million party members, cast votes for 160 official members of the CPVCC (the 10th tenure) and 25 alternate members.

    "The Ministry of Public Security will have more members of the CPVCC because we are planning to split this ministry into the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Security. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has up to six candidates (for CPVCC membership). The Ministry of Defense also has many candidates," Quat was quoted by the newspaper.

    Eight other members of the Political Bureau, who have not been nominated for membership of the ingoing CPVCC, include state president Tran Duc Luong, prime minister Phan Van Khai, chairman of the National Assembly (Vietnam's highest legislative body) Nguyen Van An, permanent secretary of the Secretariat of the CPVCC Phan Dien, defense minister Pham Van Tra, director of the CPVCC's Organization Commission Tran Dinh Hoan, director of the CPVCC's Commission on Ideological and Cultural Affairs Nguyen Khoa Diem, and vice chairman of the National Assembly Truong Quang Duoc.

    Vu Khoan, deputy prime minister and the Secretariat's member, has also not been nominated for the membership. Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Mai Ai Truc, has voluntarily asked for being withdrawn from the nomination list due to health reasons, the newspaper said.

    Many of the officials have voluntarily asked for being withdrawn from the list of candidates for the membership of the ingoing CPVCC (the 10th tenure), although they have been nominated by the outgoing CPVCC (the 9th tenure).

    As a rule, after the party congress, the National Assembly, will re-elect a state president, a chairman of the National Assembly, a prime minister and cabinet members. However, Vietnam has yet to fix the date for the work, either in the 9th session of the National Assembly (the 11th tenure) in mid-May, or the 10th session in late 2006.

    Some local officials have proposed late 2006 as the date for electing a new government, since Vietnam needs experienced leaders, while it is preparing for hosting major international events, especially APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) meetings, the newspaper said.

    The eight-day congress, running from April 18-25, is to mainly elect the party's leadership board in the new tenure, define orientations for the country's socioeconomic development in the 2006-2010 period, and adopt the party's amended statute. Enditem
