MADRID, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of internet surfers have chosen "amor" (love) as the most beautiful word of the Spanish language, according to a survey by the Madrid Writers' School.

The school announced the results of survey on its website on Sunday, as part of a series of events celebrating the World Book Day.

A total of 3,364 among the 41,022 surveyed picked "amor" as their favorite word, followed by "libertad" (freedom), "paz" (peace) and "vida" (life).

The survey, part of the "tienes la palabra" (the word is yours), an event organized by the school, attracted internet surfers from across the world during the 21-day survey. About 7,130 surfers sent messages explaining the reasons behind their choice.

Although "amor" is not the most beautiful phonetically, "its association, and what it represents have made it more beautiful to hear," Gregorio Salvador Caja, deputy director of Spain's Royal Academy said.

Most of the surveyed were from Spain and Latin American nations. Some responses came from Israel, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Enditem
