S. Korea, Thailand grab 2 titles in badminton tourney

    HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam, April 23 (Xinhua) -- South Korea won the finals at women's singles and women's doubles at an international badminton tournament which concluded in Vietnam's southern Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday, while Thailand gained titles at men's doubles and mixed doubles, and Vietnam men's singles.

    Vietnam's No.1 player Nguyen Tien Minh beat third-seed Rosobin Jeffer of Indonesia 21-7, 21-12 in the final to win a 1,200-U.S. dollar prize. Fourth-seed Minh downed top-seed Chan Yan Kit of China's Hong Kong (currently ranked 36th in the world) 2-0 in the semi-final.

    Jang Soo Jung of South Korea (ranked 41st) gained the women's singles title after defeating Ponsana Salakjit of Thailand (ranked 34th) 2-1 in the hard-earned final game. Two other South Korean players, Kim Min Jung/Oh Seul Ki, beat Thailand's Duanggawong Arookesorn/Kunchala Voravichitchaikul 2-1 at the women's doubles.

    Sudket/Phattapol and Songphon/Kunchala of Thailand triumphed in the finals at the men's doubles and mixed doubles, respectively.

    A total of 177 badminton players from 12 Asia-Pacific countries and region participated in the international badminton tournament named Robot Vietnam Satellite from April 19-23. They are from China's Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Laos, Cambodia, and the host country. Enditem
