BUDAPEST, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Hungarians voted on Sunday in the second round of the 2006 parliamentary elections which could deliver a small majority to the governing coalition led by Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany.
By 9:00 am local time (0800 GMT) on Sunday, 11.66 percent of the 5.079 million eligible voters had cast their votes, higher than the 11.39 percent by the same hour in the first round of the election held April 9.
Polling stations opened at 6:00 am local time (0500 GMT) and closed at 7:00 pm local time (1800 GMT).
The second round of the elections will be valid if at least 25 percent of eligible voters turn up for the ballot. About 331 candidates were qualified for the second round but nearly 100 of them withdrew over the past eleven days.
About 5,943 eligible voters could cast their ballots abroad. Their votes will be sent to Hungary in four days and added to the results of their respective constituencies.
In the first round of voting held April 9, about 214 of the parliament's 386 seats were decided. The Socialists-led coalition won 105 seats, while Fidesz took 97 and two went to the Hungarian Democratic Forum. Enditem |
